99 Names Of Allah: Introduction

By Shamsiya Noorul Quloob

Introduction | Al-Illah | Al-Akram | Al-Ahad | Al-Witr | Al-Wahid | Al-Musawwir

Bismillah

Before starting this series we need to question ourselves – ‘why should we know Allah’? The answer is simple, knowing Allah will help us in loving Allah better, it will help us in accepting the diving decree and be content no matter what situation we are in. Following Islam and its commandments will also become easy. For example waking up for fajr will no long will be a chore – once you truly know who Allah is you will positively be excited to wake up for fajr to have a conversation with Allah through salaah.

How Will My Life Change After Knowing Allah’s Names ?
Following changes from amongst the countless will happen:
· If we commit sins we will rush back to Allah in sincere repentance because we know He is Al-Ghafoor and Al-Afuww (The Forgiving) .
· If people are degrading us and robbing us of our honor we will understand that people were never capable of blessing us with honor and that we need to seek it from Al-Aziz (The Mighty).
· If after appointments with counselors, talks with shuyook and family you realize no one understands you and you cannot find peace, you will live with Allah’s name As-Salaam (The one who provides peace) and Al-Qadeer (The able) and you will know that only Allah can make things happen and peace comes only from Allah.

Is Knowing Enough? Or Should One Memorize?
Prophet sallahu aleyhi wasallam said:

‘To Allah belongs 99 names, 100 minus 1, anyone who “AHSAHA” (memorizes) them will enter Paradise; He (Allah) is odd (odd number, he is the Only One), and He loves odd numbers (such as 99)’

Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu reported that the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred less one. Whoever ‘ahsaaha‘ will enter Jannah.
[Bukhari and Muslim]

“Ahsaha” has a deeper meaning than just memorization – it has 5 aspects to its meaning
a) Memorize it.
b) Understand and acknowledge it.
c) Ask Allah with these names.
d) Praise Allah with these names.
e) Believe with certainty that they are Allah’s names.

Conclusion:
I pray we live with Allah’s names every single moment of our lives. To benefit most from this series maintain a dairy, take notes and “ahsaha” the names of Allah. I have always heard people say jannah has a price, though I believe memorizing 99 names of Allah is a gift to survive this duniya, because memorizing them will make our journey on this earth easy whilst leading us to jannah in akhira, therefore its definitely a gift and not a price . Truly for a believer it is always a win-win situation. I in all honesty am praying and hoping that by the end of this series the following verse of the blessed Qur’an will become our live and soul.

“sami'na waata'na- we hear and we obey.” (Surah Al-Baqara 2 : Verse 285)
