Introduction | Al-Illah | Al-Akram | Al-Ahad | Al-Witr | Al-Wahid | Al-Musawwir
Bismillah
I hope you have your pens and diaries ready! If you do not know what I am talking about please read the Introduction.
The name Al Ahad which means “The One and Only” comes from the root word "ahad" which means “to be the only one”. When we speak of the name of Allah “Al Ahad” a very familiar verse of Qur’an pops in our heads instantly “ Qul hu Allahu Ahad – Say He is Allah The One and Only (112,1) ”. This Name of Allah forms the very basis of our belief in which we need to and should single out Allah Al Ahad alone in our belief, speech and action by acknowledging His Perfection and Uniqueness. As Abu Hanifa (radhiAllah anhu) said “Allah is one not as in numbers but that there is no partners with Him”. The enormity and importance of the name Al Ahad can be witnessed by the ahadith of Abu Hurairah and Anas Ibn Malik.
It was narrated that Abu Hurairah (radhiAllah anhu) said that the Messenger of Allah (sal Allaahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Qul Huwa Allahu ahad [Say: He is Allah, (the) One] is equivalent to one third of the Quran.” (Sahih) Sunan Ibn Majah 3787
It was narrated that Anas bin Malik (radhiAllah anhu) said: “The Messenger of Allah(sal Allaahu alayhi wasallam) said: Qul Huwa Allahu ahad [Say: He is Allah, (the) One] is equivalent to one third of the Quran.” (Sahih) Sunan Ibn Majah 3788
In the Qur’an, the name Al Ahad occurs only one time!
“Say: He is Allah, the One and Only” (Surah Al-Ikhlas112:1)
Al Wahid which means The One, The Creator of diversity from unity, comes from the root word “wahad” which means “to be one, unique”. He is One Source from which all creation springs forth. Al Wahid is mentioned 13 times in the Qur’an. The Name Al Wahid also focuses strongly on the concept of Tawhid. Al Junair (radhiAllah anhu) mentioned “Tawhid is to know and believe that the creator is different from the creation.”
“Say, [O Muhammad], ‘I am only a warner, and there is not any deity except Allah, the One, the Prevailing.’ ” (Surah Sad 38:65)
"O my two companions of the prison! (I ask you): are many lords differing among themselves better, or the One Allah, Supreme and Irresistible? (Surah Yusuf 12:39)
Al Witr means The One. It comes from the root word “witr” which means Odd Numbers. This name is not mentioned in the Qur’an but it is mentioned in a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah and Abdullah Ibn Amr.
“Allah is One and He loves that which is Odd-numbered” (Classified as Sahih by Shaykh Al Albani)
Allah wants us to be original and unique. He subhaanahu wa ta’ala wants us to pursue a life of passion and greatness. Other acts of worship where we see the name of Allah Al Witr coming into play are:
- Tawaf around kabah – 7 Times – Witr number
- Times we go around safa and marwa – 7 Times
- Number of heavens above the Earth – 7
- Number of Days Prophet used to fast every month – 3
With regards to Allah’s Tawhid and Oneness, which is a recurring theme in all the three names, Imam Al Bukhari (radhiAllah anhu) mentions “Al Ahad is the One who is not similar or equal to anything”. We need to recall the incident of Bilal (radhiAllah anhu)’s torture by the mushrikeen. What did he shout? He called out “Ahad,” “Ahad” because he knew Allah is the One and Only, and only that could help him.
If we live by the names of Allah - Al Ahad, Al Witr and Al Wahid then inshaAllah saying “la illaha illah Allah” will be easy at the time of death. Because by the time of our deaths, we would have lived our whole lives believing in the Uniqueness and Oneness of Allah.
Conclusion
How many of us are going to trust and reply upon Allah alone after reading and knowing about these names? How many of us are going to live our lives dedicated to His Worship and towards gaining His Pleasure alone?
