Story: A Midnight Prayer Chapter 13

By Alawiya Abdalla

"Where IS he?" Whispers Mohamed to Khadija.

"I know right? He should have been here an hour ago" Khadija whispers back.

"Ahmed is FURIOUS" Mohamed mumbles through his teeth, while he smiles at the guests.

"I heard him talking earlier, and he was saying something like- I'm going next door to kill him- to your mum" Khadija mumbles through her teeth, while she waves at some guests.

"What is going on?" Jawahir joins in with the mumbling through the teeth thing, while waving at the guests.

"I was just telling Mohamed that Ahmed is about to go and kill Hamid you see" mumbles Khadija.

"I am so heavy, I cannot even see my feet anymore" Jawahir mumbles back.

"What's that got to do with anything we're talking about?" Khadija stops mumbling and she looks over at Jawahir, confused.

"What were we talking about again?" Jawahir blinks as she tries to remember the previous dilemma.

"Oh sweety, you have 8 months pregnancy brain. I totally forgot" Khadija hugs Jawahir, who seems to be completely dazed and uncomfortable.

"I have a massive headache, and I have pain right here Khadija" Jawahir points to a place just below her ribs.

"You are sweating sweety! Are you okay?" Khadija takes Jawahir's face in her hands. "Did Ibrahim do anything to you?" She inquires, as she examines her face for any signs of further distress.

"I am fine, let's check on Asha" says Jawahir, with a dazed look fixed on her face.

"Jawahir sit down please. Mohamed, go get Ibrahim now" Khadija orders her husband Mohamed frantically.

"What is going on here?" asks Halima.

"Jawahir is not feeling well" replies Khadija, holding Jawahir's arm as she slowly walks her to the nearest couch.

"What is going on?" asks a worried Ibrahim.

"I am a little bit worried about Jawahir, you need to take her to A&E. Just to make sure everything is fine." Khadija tries to play down Jawahir's illness when she notices the worried look on Ibrahim's face.

"Mohamed, can I have a word with you please?" Khadija takes her husband aside, and she tells him something in his ear.

Mohamed nods his head and says "I need to go and get something from my shop, and I will be back In Shaa Allah"

"What is happening, and WHERE is Hamid??" asks Ahmed, looking at a very sick looking Jawahir.

"Ahmed, I think you need to drive Ibrahim and Jawahir to the hospital right now" Khadjia orders him.

"Okay okay, but Asha?" He looks at his mum Halima for answers.

"Just take Ibrahim and Jawahir, and we will deal with this In Shaa Allah" replies Halima.

Asha

Why are my family huddled up around Jawahir? What is happening? I don't care about the etiquette of being a bride, I am going over there to check on my friend.

Asha don't smile.

Asha don't laugh.

Asha make sure you keep your hands on your lap, to show off your henna.

Asha do not stand up to join in with the celebration.

Asha do not eat.

Asha do not drink.

Well, I am hungry and I want to scratch my head!

Oh forget this. I'm going to check on my my best friend and that means I am getting up.

I hold my dress with my hands, and I make my way to Jawahir.

Must they make brides-to-be wear such long dresses? I mean, is it necessary? It violates so many health and safety issues, it is unreal.

I get funny looks as I make my way to where Jawahir is sitting, but I do not care.

"Hey guys, what is going on??" I ask as soon as I spot Jawahir.

Oh no, she doesn't look too well!

"Ahmed will take Jawahir and Ibrahim to the A&E sweety. You go back please" replies my mum. "You need to get back. NOW" she says.

"Oh no way! I am staying here with you guys." I make myself comfortable by sitting. Might as well, it looks like I am going to be stood up anyway.

I cannot believe I just said that! I was only thinking it, but now as time ticks away I am starting to believe that he really won't show up.

It is just starting to occur to me why Ahmed kept insisting that I pray Istikhara!!

I was just too excited at the prospect of being a bride-to-be that I neglected something so important like praying Istikhara.

I watch as my brother Ibrahim supports Jawahir, following Ahmed to his car and I make my mind up there and then.

I will pray Istikhara right this minute.

I will take my make up off, and my very uncomfortable-health-and-safety-violating-long dress and put on my praying Abaya and pray right NOW.

I take my long dress in my hands__Again. And I ignore my mother's calling of my name to come back and sit on my chair.

I should have done this earlier__WAY earlier but I am still alive aren't I?

I will ever forgive Hamid for this, he better know it.

Hamid

I am trying to move, I really am but I just absolutely can't.

Fear has gripped my heart and soul, making it impossible for me to see the gravity of what I'm about to do.

I was in a complete state of panic, when a loud knock startled me.

"Hamid, open the door this is Mohamed" comes Mohamed's voice from behind the door.

Oh no! I guess my room mates let him in.

I hate my room mates.

"Hamid, open the door or I will break it" Mohamed threatens me.

I could

A) Open the door.

B) Let him break it.

Either way, the door WILL open.

Would should I do? What should I do?

The knocks grow louder and louder, so I decide to open it.

"What do you think you're doing? and WHY is your tie backwards?" asks a very angry and confused Mohamed.

"I can't go through with it" comes my squeaky voice.

"You CAN'T go through with it?? And how do you suppose I will explain this to my twin sister? My twin sister, dressed in the finest dress just so she can announce to our family that you two will be married soon?" This is the first time I've actually seen Mohamed THIS angry.

"It's just_just__I am__You see__" Oh WHY is it so hard to say it.

"You are so lucky it was ME, and not Ahmed who knocked on your door" says Mohamed with a piercing stare.

"I am so sorry. I swear I am really REALLY sorry. I should have told you all earlier, and not leave it last minute." I cannot believe that I'm finally about to blurt the truth about me!!

"What are you talking about mate?? I am losing my patience, and I am starting to see why Ahmed really wanted to punch you now!" says the usually calm and collected Mohamed.

"I was__I was___I was born out of wedlock" my voice barely a whisper.

"ARE YOU___" Mohamed doesn't finish his sentence, and he remains very VERY still with his eyes wide open.

"Yes, I am an illegitimate child." A huge weight lifting off my shoulders.

Subhana Allah, instead of feeling how I was feeling all those years ago___I feel OK and eerily calm.

That's it.

My secret is finally out.

I'm glad the secret is finally out but i feel sorry for hamid as i know barawanis take this matter very serious. is Asha still going to marry him regardless of his illegitimacy?

Oh My! This is going way toooo interesting!
I thought the last part is here
But now I also don't want it to end........ :)

I had a really strong feeling that Hamid was an illegitimate child! Now that the secret is finally out, I wonder how everyone will react! It's not even his fault. I think Asha would understand that, but what about the rest of her family? OMG. The suspense is killing me! I cannot cannot cannot wait for the next part in shaa ALLAH! :D
